Sewing Studio

Untitled design-42

Some of AIRE’s projects start as a small idea, a suggestion from someone who has a talent and wants to put it to good use, and someone willing to make it happen. This is how our sewing studio came about.

A former resident of AIRE, who was a seamstress in her home country, wanted to continue her craft, and in June 2023 we received the donation of a sewing machine. The machine was installed in a small room at AIRE and we also received donations of fabrics and supplies for various projects.

The former resident who inspired the studio is no longer at AIRE, but others have arrived and been  enchanted by the space. Some already had experience with sewing and others started learning when they came to AIRE. Even though they don’t speak the same language, it’s a time when these women can work together, dedicate themselves to learning something new and, little by little, gain their financial independence.

Being a refugee woman means giving up your own needs and dreams to ensure the safety of your family. They go through many challenges, often not knowing if they will have anything to eat or where they will sleep the next day, and invariably they put themselves last. They are heroines not recognized by society, and the moment they have in the studio is a reminder that in addition to being mothers and wives, they are also women who have the right to dedicate themselves to work and a craft that brings them personal joy and satisfaction.
